Proximity Switch and Cable Part Numbers
Finding part numbers for proximity switches and prox switch cables by using current and appearance.
Milnor uses inductive proximity switches in many product lines.  Inductive proximity switches use electromagnetic fields to detect metallic objects entering the field.  When the metallic target changes the field, a signal is sent to the logic module connected to the switch.

If you have your proximity switch in your hand, you can figure out the part number.

There are 4 parameters that determine the part number.  The Manufacturer, The Size, The Current, and whether the sensor is shielded or (un)shielded.

Manufacturers - Allen Bradley or Turck

Allen Bradley

These proximity sensors are black and begin with 09RPM***** in the part number (typically found on COLF/COSH/COBUD/COBUC).

Turck

These proximity sensors are yellow and begin with 09RPS***** in the part number.

Cables for Allen Bradley and Turck proximity sensors are NOT interchangeable.

SIZE - 12, 18, or 30

Milnor uses 3 sizes of proximity switches: 12,18, and 30 millimeter.

Current - AC (3 pin) or DC (4 pin)

Proximity switches using Alternating Current (AC) uses a 3-pin configuration.
Proximity switches using Direct Current (DC) uses a 4-pin configuration

Shielded or Unshielded

Unshielded proximity switches provide a larger magnetic field and protrude from the mount.
Shielded proximity switches provide a more precise magnetic field and can sit more flush with the mount.

User-added image PART NOTED ABOVE AND PICTURED BELOW IS 09RPS12AAS.  THIS DOES NOT FIT THE NUMBERING PROTOCOL IN TABLES BELOW.  THREE PIN / NORMALLY OPEN / SHIELDED WOULD BE - CAS  HOWEVER, THIS PART ENDS WITH AAS.  THIS EXCEPTION SHOULD BE NOTED WITH 'EXCEPTIONS' LISTED LOWER ON THE PAGE

So, if you're holding a 3 pin, yellow sensor cover, middle diameter size (compare it to the connection threads), with threads going right to the top of the switch, you have a 09RPS + 18 + C(norm. open) +  A(ac) + S(shielded) or as we like to call it:

09RPS18CAS  (pictured below)

Or, if you have a 4 pin, black sensor cover, large diameter size (compare it to the connection threads), with threads going to the end of the sensor, you have a 09RPM + 30 + A(norm. open) + D(dc) + S(sheilded)  You have part #:

09RPM30ADS (pictured below)

One more example: If you're holding a 4 pin, yellow sensor casing, large (compare it to the connection threads), with the top of the sensor cover exposed, you have a 09RPS + 30 + A(norm. open)  + D(dc) + U(unshielded)  or a:

09RPS30ADU  (pictured below)

For every rule there are exceptions and there are a few exceptions to the numbering protocol.  These are due to special circumstances and needs.  Fortunately, they are few.

  • First, explosion proof proximity switches for an explosion proof CBW

#1) 09RPS30ADUY / EXPROOF BARRIER FOR 09RPS30ADUX
#2) 09RPS30ADUZ / CABLE 4M FOR EXPROOF PROX 09RPS30ADUX EUROFAST
#3) 09RPS30ADUX / PRXSW.QK CONN.30M NO-DC UNSHLD EXPLOSION PROOF EUROFAST

  • Second, PNP (as opposed to NPN) output proximity switches used on MilRail systems for Trolley Detection, Elevator, and Separator Stops

09RPS30ADW / PROX SW QK CONN 30M NO-DC UNSHIELDED EUROFAST PNP OUTPUT
09RPS30ADX / PROX SW QK CONN 30M NO-DC SHIELDED EUROFAST PNP OUTPUT

  • Third, while all of our proximity switches carry an IP67 rating for resistance to dust and water, one proximity switch is available with a higher IP68 rating for use with CBWs.  It is also more resistant to magnetic fields.

  1. 09RPS30ADV / PRXSW.QK CONN.30M NO-DC UNSHLD EUROFAST

CABLES

YOU WILL NEED TO KNOW THE MANUFACTURER OF YOUR PROXIMITY SWITCH TO CHOOSE THE CORRECT CABLE.

ALLEN BRADLEY CABLES

  • CAN ONLY BE USED WITH ALLEN BRADLEY PROXIMITY SENSORS (BLACK SENSOR COVERS)
  • 4 PIN FEMALE
  • 90 DEGREE CONNECTIONS
  • TWO SIZES 2 METER AND 5 METER
    • 09RPMCD902 / CONN.90-DEG FEMALE DC 3A300V 2M
    • 09RPMCD905 / CONN 90-DEG FEMALE DC 3A300V 5M

TURCK CABLES

  • USED WITH TURCK PROXIMITY SENSORS (YELLOW SENSOR COVERS)
  • 4 PIN FEMALE FOR DC SENSORS / 3 PIN FEMALE FOR AC SENSORS
  • 90 DEGREE AND STRAIGHT CONNECTION HEADS
    User-added image  User-added image
  • 2 LENGTHS FOR AC CABLES
    • 2 METER AND 5 METER
  • 3 LENGTHS FOR DC CABLES
    • 2 METER, 3 METER, AND 5 METER AND 10 METER.
      • The 10 meter cable only comes with a straight connector.  That part number is 09RPSDC010 / CONN.STR FEMALE DC 3A 300V 10M RK4T-10 - EUROFAST

See Note on 10 meter cable above

EXAMPLES

If you need a TURCK cable that's 3 pin, 2 meters long and a straight connector, you'd need 09RP + TAC + 0 + 0 + 2.

Or, Part Number 09RPTAC002

Suppose you need a 90 degree connection cable for a TURCK DC proximity switch that's 5 meters long, you'd need a 09RP + SDC + 0 + 9 + 5.

Or, Part Number 09RPSDC095
