Counting Wire Numbers on MTA Plugs
Most plug manufacturers label there plugs to show you where pin 1 is located. Here are some common plugs found on Milnor equipment with these markings highlighted.

Milnor Numbering Format

Each plug has a designation. Plugs that connect from one cabinet to another typically had 3-5 letters like WCL or WCCD. Plugs that land on a board like an I/O board or processor have a designation that starts with MTA the has the number of the plug, 32. When you are looking for WCL, you are looking for a plug that connects to another plug. When you are looking for MTA4, you are looking for a plug on a board.

Each of these plug designations is typically followed by a dash and a pin number. MTA32-2 is pin two on plug MTA32. WCL-9 is pin nine on plug WCL.
