Video - Flow Meters - Burkert Mag Meters
Burkert Mag Meters are used to measure the Pulse Flow flow quantities. We will talk about the functionality and cleaning of a Mag Meter.

Components of the Burkert Mag Meter System

  1. Burkert Sensor (installed into the flow of water at the module)
  2. Burkert Transmitter (mounted on the side of the load chute)
  3. Milnor High Speed I/O board (board address 81)

The Big Idea

Water needs to flow into the CBW and the processor needs to govern how much water is used. The Burkert Mag Meter reports the the flow using a pulse input signal on the High Speed I/O board, addressed 81. The transmitter and Mentor program are both set at .1 units per pulse. This can represent .1 gallon or liter depending on English or Metric settings.

Connections

Typically, a tunnel has two flow meters, you may have more or less. The transmitter pulse wired to the High Speed I/O is connected for the following:

Pump #Termination Point at High Speed I/O
1MTA 4-1
2MTA 4-2
3MTA 4-3

How does it work?

  1. The sensor has two prongs at the end of the stem.
  2. The prongs are submerged in the flowing water.
  3. The transmitter calculates the flow from the sensor.
  4. The transmitter makes an input for every unit of fluid flowed. (There is a setting for the unit amount. If the transmitter is set to 0.1 gallons, the meter would send 28 pulse signals, representing 2.8 gal.)
  5. The High Speed I/O board records the number of signals received from each flow meter and reports the data back to the processor.
Note: the units for the transmitter and the processor need to be set the same. This can cause major differences in the calculated flow compared to the actual flow.
  6. The processor calculates flow rate and number of gallons flowed. This data can be seen on the Mentor display.
  7. The processor then adjusts the pump output for an optimized flow rate to achieve the desired flow quantity.

Warning: The mag meter units will still have water in the pipe. This water may be hot and/or contain chemicals that may cause harm. Be sure the CBW is off, the water has cooled, and wear protection equipment when dealing with chemistry.
