The Milnor black box memory device allows data from one machine to be downloaded to the black box over a 485 serial link. The box also needs 5 volts applied to operate. These connections were provided on most machines with a 9 pin download plug.
Today we recommend a picture library be taken of the machine programming rather than using this archaic method, but if you have one, it just might work.
Here are some helpful hints on the software. Also know that downloading memory is covered in the machine manual provided with your machine.
There were software version for the box and requirements for new machinery was added to the software on the memory box. You have to pop the box open to find out which software you have. Early version may not work with later machines without later download box software.

00008 - LB 3/12/02 **** Support for 188 proc. board ****
- In previous versions, if the header got out of sync the software would go back to receive state 0 and leave the light on. The user would think the download was continuing. At the end of the download, the receive light would still stay on, but now data was written to the box. I changed the software so that if the header gets out of sync, all 3 lights will flash indicating an error condition. The only way out of this condition is to power off the box. Memory should be cleared before re-trying the download. This was noticed during the development of 188 board download. This version now supports the 188 proc. board.
To download to a 188 proc. board, set dip switches 4 and 5 on.
